BUSTA MEDAGLISTICA IN COMMEMORAZIONE DEL 70° ANNIVERSARIO DELL'ACCADEMIA BEZALEL DI ARTE E DESIGN

FEBBRAIO 1976

The 70th anniversary of Israel's leading art institute, the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, is commemorated by this medallic first day cover issued by the International Society of Postmasters. The cover bears a stamp canceled in Jerusalem on February 17, 1976. An officiai issue of Israel, the stamp was designed by Arie Hecht, a student in his fourth year at the Bezalel Academy, and bears a stylized key depicting the facade of the school building. The inscriptions on the stamp appear in both English and Hebrew. The perforated bottom portion, known as a tab, is a unique feature of Israeli postage as is the fact that the English, Arabie and Hebrew languages appear on both the stamp and the postmark. The sterling Silver proof medal was sculptured by well-known artist Charles Ross and minted by The Franklin Mint. It portrays Professor Boris Schatz, the founder of the school. At the top of the medal are the three basic symbols of design. Bezalel, named after the Biblical artisan who built and decorated the Ark of the Covenant, was founded in 1906. As a vocational arts and crafts school established when Israeli society was in its pioneering stage, Bezalel focused on the creation of an originai Hebrew art style. Despite widespread recognition, Bezalel was forced to dose in 1928 for lack of funds. However, with im-petus from a wave of European immigrants, the new Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts reopened in 1935. In the 1960s the curriculum was broad-ened to include the concept of design as a social service, and in 1969 Bezalel was formally declared an academy of arts and design. Since its inception, the school has contributed much to improving the quality of life in Israel.
